One of the major responsibilities in geology jobs is to survey the land where the drilling is to take place, and determine what sort of seismic forces are present in the area. This is because drilling for oil involves drilling into the ground with enormous drills, which cut into the earth with great force. Petroleum companies have to be very careful when they are drilling in areas where seismic forces are strong, for fear that they might trigger earthquakes and other disasters.
Those employed in geology jobs must also use sonic equipment to determine the composition of the land through which the drill must cut. Loose rock and dirt is the easiest substrate to dig through, while hard bedrock and granite pose a challenge to even the most advanced drills. It is therefore up to those employed in geology jobs to find the path of least resistance through the earth that the drill will take to reach the oil or gas below.
Of the many petroleum engineering jobs available, geology jobs are among the most specialized. They require intimate knowledge of the rock and soil that make up the earth. They also require a firm understanding of the seismic forces that move and shape the earth. Finally, like all petroleum engineering jobs, geology jobs place great stress upon the shoulders of workers. Crews working at drilling sites are almost always on a strict deadline, and they have to perform their tasks within those deadlines, lest they delay the entire drilling operation.
If you wish to be employed in any petroleum engineering jobs, then you must also be prepared to get your hands dirty. Drilling sites are not clean places by any stretch of the imagination, as drills dig up many hundreds of tons of rock every day, to deposit them on the surface where vehicles are waiting to cart the rock away. You will likely find the working conditions dirty and dusty, and most definitely not anything like the clean and cultured environment of an office job.
If you find yourself employed in one of the many petroleum engineering jobs available, then you should definitely be prepared to work harder than you ever have before. You can also take great satisfaction in knowing that your work helps to provide people around the world with the energy to keep their lights working and their vehicles running.
